The gardens in the historical city center represent a unique connection between architecture and nature. This seminar discusses the gardens of the Prague Castle, the splendid gardens of the aristocratic palaces underneath the Castle hill, and the imperial game preserves.
Thanks to an extensive ring of gardens and parks, the Prague Castle has a majestic atmosphere. It represents a silent enclave in the center of the metropolis. The first Habsburg emperor on the Bohemian throne had a Renaissance Queen’s Summer Palace and a “giardinetto” with a singing fountain built for his beloved wife in the newly founded Royal garden. Their estate was soon filled with exotic trees and an aviary. Europe’s first tulips, which caused a ” fever” and the first stock market crash a hundred years later, entered the continent through this very garden.
Terraced gardens with Baroque pavilions and ponds converge from the slopes below Prague Castle. The aristocrats imitated the sovereign and had their own palaces with splendid gardens built underneath the Castle hill. Today white peacocks, owls, and exotic birds are kept in the Wallenstein and Vrtba gardens.
Led by an expert on the History of Art, PhDr. Katerina Prusova, Ph.D., this conversation will offer a walk through the romantic gardens in Old Prague. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased appreciation of this unique ecological landmark and all the best tips for a future in-person visit.
